In 2000, a handful of Gig Harbor (Washington) firefighters began gathering gear and supplies unusable in the United States, and loaded it -- destined for Tecate, Mexico. The members drove their personal vehicles some 1,300 miles across the border. For the Mexican firefighters, it was the mother load of firefighting provisions, if fact, most of the gear was better than their own frontline arsenal. During the same trip, firefighters and medical workers also receive operational fire ground training as well. “It’s about firefighters helping their brothers and sisters,” said trip organizer Lt. Joel Schwarz. “I believe they truly appreciated our efforts” he added.
Since 2000 we have grown and developed to become an organization of many emergency workers with contacts throughout the country. We still gather equipment and provide training and are working on many partnerships to ultimately do what it was we started and that is to provide a better safer work environment for our brothers and sisters in other countries.
We have affiliated with other groups to help their missions in other countries like, Guatamala, Costa Rico, Africa, and Chile, while keeping with our own first committment in Mexico.
Our first and most successfull partnership with Tecate Fire in the northern Baja has recently adopted two fire departments near to them. We hope this is just the beginning. 2008 is the year we begin working jointly with Tijuana fire, Tecate Fire and the other large departments in the Baja region. These Departments have made a committment to work together to bring all the firefighters together in an association in order to improve working conditions in the State of Baja. Ultimately those customers they serve will benefit. Thats what keeps us going.
